Question for Mr. Gadgets?

Dick,

Showing my ignorance here but, can you pressure test an XR lower with it off the upper housing? Or does the entire unit need to be together to achieve this?

Thanks, Ragged

Yes you can. I welded a pipe onto a flat plate and bolt it onto the lower, covering the vertical shaft. I also welded a nut to the top of the pipe, so I can attach my pressure tester.

I did the same.

You can pressure test anything if you can get it to seal! I want a pic of that pipe, Vinny!! Nice idea!

So do I assume the answer is "No", shy of a clever McGuiver'ish approach? Just trying to simplify the fix of the loose propshaft and make sure it's sealed right without dropping the entire lower. I'm lazy, and really hate to expend energy to fix something someone else focked up in the first place.

Well it is possible. The flat stock with a pipe on it that Vinny is talking about seems to work. I have not done it personally. I usually don't see leaks in the lower if the surfaces look ok. The mating surfaces between the upper and lower are more prone to leaks. Especially if you nick the bottom of the upper putting it on the lower..

Dick send me your email and I will send a pic of mine, I can't post pics on here.
