Bravo 3 Question
I'm looking at a Formula PC 34 that has Bravo 3 outdrives. Strange thing is both lower units say Bravo 3 on them but they are noticably different. The uppers look to be the same. Obviously one of the lowers has ben replaced - were there a couple of generations of Bravo 3's?

There is a Bravo 2 that has a much shorter case with the dual prop than the B3. Any pics?

What year is the boat? The early Bravo III's (mid-90's) had a 2 piece cavitation plate. That is the only real significant difference in years other than the addition of a second zinc over the aft prop and a bullet-zinc on the prop shaft. The only other dual-prop lower Merc had was the Blackhawk. That lower would have been significantly shorter and more swept-back.
Edit. 2005 and newer Bravo uppers have the new swept back design due to changes in how they shift. But you said the uppers look identical so... |
There is a Bravo 3 XR, which they use on bigger boats now, maybe someone switched over one after the failure. That boat has to be hard on drives.

Both units say Bravo III on them. See how the port cavitation plate is pretty much flat across the surface where it mounts to the upper? The starboard side has a raised portion that blends with the ridge on the upper, looks like it might be for reinforcement.

Oh oh.. you guys called me on that one and I will admit!! I was wrong. Not sure what I was thinking. I know the B2 had a fat bullet. Not sure why I was thinking dual prop.
Maybe it is the lack of sleep and old age catching up with me!! You guys are correct. The B2 was a single prop.. My Bad! Not sure what you have there. Looks like someone added something to the tail of the upper?? I have only worked on a couple of B3's and no B2's.. :( I promise to be more careful with my outbursts of ignorance.. :) Dick |
No worries, I appreciate you reading my post. Check out this diagram, supposedly for a Bravo III, looks just like the starboard drive. Part number 11. What the heck is this thing?
