Bravo 1 prop shaft sheared off!!
Today as I was coming back in I hear a bang and lose my forward and reverse. I'm close enough to the dock to walk it back in and when i get it on the trailer, i see that the prop shaft is cut clean off with about 3-4 inches left showing. it was a totally clean break with no jagged edges showing. I get back to the house, put the muffs on, and check forward and reverse which both work except for a wobble of the shaft. I checked for any play of the shaft and none back and forth, but if i wiggle it i get a tiny bit. I'm taking it to my mech. tomorrow, but to put my mind at ease, anybody ever have this happen? What was the final answer? Obviously, at the very least right now, I'm out a 4 blade ss prop and the shaft. Is this going to get worse? It's a bravo 1 with a 502 mag on a 1998 27' Fountain Fever. Thanks in advance for all input.

happend to me last year. replace with better shaft from imco. Drive has 2 seals. 1 keeps water out the outher keeps oil in. The outer seal leaked water in and weakend the metle.

Did the shaft break at the begining of the splines? If that is the case then it was probably twisted from in and out of the water??? The Imco propshaft is the way to go. Otherwise you could go to a 1 1/4" Merc shaft, but it would be more money and not needed.

There is about an inch of spline left(all twisted to hell). I'm going to look into the Imco shaft. If you guys know of a reputable dealer, I am all ears. Thanks again guys.

Actually, I see i can order directly from IMCO. Good thinking.

Insurance guy is going to look at it today. I can get it fixed but if I can get them to foot the bill that's fine too. I can say Fountain and Hydromotive customer service have been A+ for me so at least I can take that from this experience. |
