worn gimble rings!!

hello, to start off i am new to this forum, I have been boating for over 25 yrs, my first performance boat was a baja 240 which i sold about 7 yrs ago and just purchased a powerquest 290 enticer, always wanted to step up to twins! Im gonna pull the drives and repair the gimble rings on the bravo's. Probably use jrmarine, saw some posts about gaining access to the pivot shaft nut WITHOUT drilling the holes. Need to know what wrenches to use, looks like some of you have done this. I am a auto tech by trade, so doing this job won't be a problem. Any input of info would be greatly appriciated! would like to do this repair without drilling the holes if possible. I have alot of paintience!! and used to working standing on my head!! ha, ha thankyou! Robert

Only way to get to them without drilling holes is to pull the motors.

I used a hole saw and cut two holes into the back of the transom assy housing to get to the top bolts and tiller arm. Worked out quite nicely. I will cover it with a stainless plate. I used a die grinder to get the holes large enough to use some wrenches to get it apart.. Much easier than pulling the transom assy off the stand off box..
I have some pics if you are interested..

i plan to drill the holes and use rons method, but saw some posts on here about getting the nut off from inside without drilling the holes. I don't mind the plugs. the boat will not sit in the water. have already pulled the rams and drives off tonight. after getting all the weight off, i can fell the wear in the gimbal rings, they feel like they are just flopping in the breeze!

let me see some pics, you didn't drill the holes but did cut a piece out off the rear of the transome bousing?

I got the rings off with ease..about 30min for both sides once I had the holes drilled. I got all my parts back from jrmarine and all looks great, gonna try to get some work done this weekend!
