Volvo DPX-R

Does anyone have more knowledge of the strength of this drive and has anyone run some good horsepower on them. What kind of speeds? I know the bat boats used these drives with great success. Thanks

:eek:c'mon someone out there must have some info on these drives.......:lolhit:

Yep.. Good drive. It was kind of like VP's answer to merc's black hawk, although they were not quite as short. They held power fairly well & performed well. They were offered with an integrated Hydraulic steering.

The current problem though is the expense now if you need to replace one. They are disconitnued now for some time @ VP. So whatever is left in stock at volvo, or what ever internals cross over to VP's other drives you can get. Otherwise it is gonna be a challenge. The other issue is they were a pricey drive to begin with..

Hope this helps.. :) Jamie / Lakeside

Thanks Lakeside, They seem to be a very solid drive, with the built in hydraulic steering stabilizers. Have been reading nothing good about them. The only downfall is they have been dis-continued and pricey.

Do yo think they are capable of hanlding speeds in the upper 90's

LAKESIDE RESTORATIONS 01-07-2011 01:34 PM

I don't see why not. They used to couple some of them to some stout Innovation marine stuff many moons ago. I don't recall the actual speed #'s on them, but some of the Scarabs & Formulas that I know they ended up in did rather well with them.. ;) J

thanks again, we will soon find out. I will have to take it easy on holeshots etc to make sure I don't break anything. Bring in the hp nice and easy:eek::hitit:

we sold a couple of 33AVS's with 600 DPX's.......ran in low 90s
we also sold some in 38 AVS (not a light boat)....ran great and in the low 80's

campionchase910 01-07-2011 01:59 PM

how do you think it will hold out in a 30' campion chase v hull Apex hull. with a single 598cu.in whipple dyno'd at around 968.2 hp at 8psi.:grinser010: boat weighs 5800lbs dry weight

That kind of power will give it a good test.. I dont know of any that were behind something that stout.. Most of the stuff I know of was behind 600 hp or less..

I would say the DPX is easily as strong as a B1 and built better too. But it is not a SSM, Konrad or a Arneson..

If you are going to beat on it, you would be better off with something built to handle a little more abuse..

So, yes easing into that kind of power with the sticks would be highly advised, but it is solid advice for any set up. I find the better you take care of something, usually the better it takes care of you.. ;)

Jammie / Lakeside

campionchase910 01-07-2011 02:39 PM

ok Jamie thanks for the info, I would really like a arneson, but they are very hard to find used, then I would be able to beat on it like a rented mule......................but yes I will certainly have to ease up on the sticks................:lolhit:

thanks anchor for taking the time to share some info, it shall be interesting

scarabman 01-07-2011 02:54 PM

I have them on my 33AVS and they have around 400 hours on them although they do need some work now. and I am having a tough time trying to decide how to proceed. As to speeds, my boat will run into the low 90s.

I can tell you this with certainty, if you are thinking of using the DPX like a Blackhawk in a surfacing type application, DO NOT! They were not intended for that and it will not hold up.

campionchase910 01-07-2011 03:02 PM

thanks Scarab Man, I hoping to get one season out of the drive before upgrade. I will have to keep the back of the boat in the water for sure. I only plan on using it as in the water only, hopefully no airbourne use and if make sure to pull back on the stick before launching:ernaehrung004: I am hoping under normal accelaration out of the hole and pampering the drive it will get me by for now.

verbi69 01-07-2011 05:38 PM

Big guy, just be easy out of the hole until you get on plane......then roll into the power.
No Evel Knevel.......

campionchase910 01-07-2011 05:58 PM

:lolhit:no doubt easy out of the hole, I hope to get a season out of it, which I beleive I can if I dont beat on it:eek:

verbi69 01-09-2011 08:37 AM

For the lake your running there is never enough chop to go airborne....unless you go play on the bigger pond.

campionchase910 01-09-2011 09:05 AM

very easy to launch when hitting another boats wake.I've done this with a smaller previous boat (phazar)and thought it was coming over.

verbi69 01-09-2011 03:29 PM

:lolhit:I hear ya but your little Phaser is nothing like your Chase.....
and I'm sure your brothers and Moe will be a good distance back!! lol

campionchase910 01-09-2011 03:39 PM

Did you go to the boat show in Toronto?

verbi69 01-09-2011 05:51 PM

Nope, not this year.
What about you?

campionchase910 01-09-2011 07:04 PM

maybe next week-end, but I hear they don't have any go fast boats on display just cruisers, both brothers were there this past week-end.

verbi69 01-09-2011 08:21 PM

That's usually the way it goes, probably less than half a dozen every year.
I think Miami is the place to go....especially for what you like.
