water leaking in engine compartment thru trs drives
 

i have 2x 330hp with borg warner trans and trs drives
i have water coming in thru the drives mounted to the transom

how hard is it to replace these seals?
will i need an engine hoist?
what are the steps to replace these? do i have to completely remove the trans?

Where exactly is it coming through? between the gimbal and the transom? or from where the tranny plugs into the back side of the gimbal?

the gimbal and the transom. they have one of the drives on the outside of the boat matted up to the transom with silicon everywhere

You'll have to pull everything to fix that. Engine, transmission and entire gimble assembly. $40 gasket. Part #10 in this link.

you could try 2snug up the transom assy nuts and bolts. but be careful you could crack the inner transom plate. also watch the transom if its soft you will see itcollapsing or oozing water

dont mean to sound stupid but can i prop the motors up somehow ( block) and unbolt and take the tranny out and gimbel and fix it that way since i dont have acess to a hoist??

It can be done but isn't easy. It would be especially hard on a twin engine setup. I did it once on my single engine. The transmission would be left in with the engine. You have to support the engine and trans together at the transmission end. I held it up with a sling. Then remove the 8 nuts that hold the gimble assembly on. A couple of them are hard as hell to get to. It's a real pain in the a$$. Much easier to pull the engine and trans. Can't you rent a hoist somewhere ? Know anyone with a back hoe ?

Friggin cork gaskets. I mean could they produce a chincier part or what? Plan on replacing the gimble studs while your at it. If I remember correctly, the bottom 2 are bolts and nuts? I almost sunk my Scarab because of those gaskets. Also if they've been leaking for awhile, be sure to check the moisture content of the transom around the lower gimble area. I would guess there's some rot or at least some wet wood. Good luck, pretty big job.

Nope. Their all studs with nuts on them. 8 of'm.
