possible to remove trans without removing motor??
 

i need to remove my borg warner trans to rebuild it. i have the drive and gimbal ass. off already.
is there a way possible to unbolt the trans from the bellhousing and remove the trans?
does the trans have a driveshaft that needs pulled out?

No way to do it while in the boat. Engine and trans must come out together. Then you can unbolt the trans from the bellhousing and remove it. No driveshaft out the rear of the trans. Your input shaft on your drive plugs into the tail end of the trans. You should be able to see the tail end of the trans from the outside if you have the drive and gimble assembly off.

Why did you take the gimbal off ????

And yes..you can but its a PITA ,,, i think lifting the engine up and just moving it 2 inches forward is fibe..you can probably do so without disconecting it ecsept for the water hose and exhaust !

If you have enough room in front of the engine you may be able to unbolt the motor and move it forward but I always just take the motor and tranny out all together.

I had a 38 Cigarette w/#5 SSM drives on the transom, i.e. w/o box's.
I removed the drive, sat on the swim platform, with the engine hatch removed, and removed the nuts that held the gimble on the transom. The bottom nuts were a real ***** to get to but it is possible and use an air ratchet to speed the process. There was enough room then to reach through the opening in the transom to remove the tailstock on the plug-in C72 transmission. With that removed I was able to come down from the top,remove the transmission bolts and pull the transmission back enough to clear the bellhousing and turn it slightly and then pull it straight up and out.
