#6 Dry Sump Oil
Where to you check and/or add oil to the Mercury #6 dry sump drives?
What is the procedure for changing the oil? I just bought my first boat with #6 drives, and everything is very different. I don't see a drive fluid resevior anywhere. I'm guessing there is a oil fill plug somewhere and they just need to be filled to the top? Thanks in advance for your responces! |
Lower half - STBD side.... drain plug bottom ... where the top meets the lower half, same side - vent plug - fill from the bottom up to this vent plug. You do not fill the drive completely full of oil like a Bravo. And use Torco oil - DO NOT USE Merc High Perf oil....

why torco and not merc hi perf??
|
Because that's what mercury says and if they say it then it must be right. :evilb: maybe you guys should call the man who invented the dry six and ask what oil you should run. WWW.weismann.net

sorry my bad -- didn't catch the dry sump part
according to my merc manual merc hi perf is what they are calling for for a wet #6 -- has this changed for the wet ones? |
Dry sump 6's have a pump in the lower that pushes the oil through the drive - Wet Sump 6's are just that - wet to the top. Merc High Perf oil is a thicker viscosity - Torco is similiar to motor oil and a thinner viscosity to be pumped via a gear pump in the nose of the lower half.

if your running hi horsepower the gears hold up much better if your running a thicker oil than say torco.
