New Skeg For #6 Dry Sump?

Hello everyone. A friend of mine took a chunk out of his skeg on a Mercury #6 dry sump drive, and needs it repaired ASAP before an up-coming poker run. I heard that a new skeg can be purchased and welded on, but I am not sure where these can be purchased from? If anyone has done this before and can tell me where the skegs for dry sump 6's can be purchased it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just got through doing the repairs myself on a #6. Found a REAL good welder and he cut the broken part off and cut a replacement out of 1/2" aluminum plate and then ground it down. Can't even tell it was broken. AND, he came to my shop to do it. Believe that!!!

Where are you?

Never a good idea to cut anything off and weld a new skeg on. A weld is strong but the area around it is never the same from the heat. Single engine outboards (race) throw away the gearcase rather than weld on new skegs. Too dangerous. Just have a good welder add material to the damaged section.
