Need help ID'ing this...
Well my trans is toast... Seals are gone and when I pulled the drive last night the splines are looking really bad...
There is an ID badge on it that says: Mercruiser Marine Model number 400 Serial Number 6844291 http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e6.../BOATTRANS.jpg So what do I need to search for to replace this thing.... |
Turbo probably has some used ones he'd sell for retail +10%
|
Isn't that an old TRS transmission?

I pulled the drive last night over at Sacket's place and well aparently driving in reverse for a weekend wasnt the best idea lol. |

I think that is pretty common stuff in there. I'd bet A & Red's could hook a brotha up.
And yes, driving in reverse was not a good idea. Those transmissions don't like to be loaded in reverse. That gear is meant for idle only from my understanding. |
About all I can tell you is it's a 1984 MERCRUISER 400
|
I have drive shafts and carriers for those.
|
The splines inside the trans are toast the splines on the drive shaft are fine. The trans needed rebuilt anyway, I am just trying to weigh my options of buying a used one and having a spare to rebuild and put in when the other one does the same thing, or just rebuilding this one...
|
I guess what I want/need to know is are these the same as a Borg Warner 71c or 72c or any velvet drive trans or what...
|
You got a pic of the entire trans?

I did pull these numbers off the side... 10-05-065-901 not sure what that means, there was also a WG and a DIV cast into it as well.. |
Well after doing a bunch of internet searching looks like I missed the tag on the trans... does anyone have a good pic of the trans ID tag on a B.W. trans..

Tag will be on the port side towards the front facing up. If it's a red tag and the model number starts off as 10-17 than it's a 71c. If it's a green tag and the model number starts off as 10-18 than it's a 72c.
Is it possible that ID tag is for the engine? They did make the 400 cyclone from '80 to '86. |
Most likley thats a 72 series. You need a 1018-014. The part that connects to the drive comes from Mercury. That should be easy to find here, if not we have a bunch of them rebuilt with new bearings & seals ready to go.

Yes I believe a Borg Warner transmissions are the same 71c has one forward clutch plate and 72c has two forward plates, (I believe) I had a 1987 400 with a Borg Warner 72c, should be interchangeable! I have a #2 speedmaster if you need one. Hope you find a trans soon

http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o38889-en.html I am half tempted to sell 2 drives and buy 1 konrad for the right, but thats probably not gonna happen either. So I went and found the Velvet drive tag, it says: Model 10-18-014 1 to 1 ratio serial # 9369 So is this a 71c or 72c... and whats the difference between them anyway? |
Oh wait just figured it out. 10-18 = 72C
