was told by the dealer today that when they change drive oil they allways remove tank and wash it out!

If you changed it out at the intervals that you are supposed to, you wouldn't have a sludge problem. You going to run your car oil for 5 years and expect it to look clean too?

I change my gear lube twice a season and it still occurs after time.

I had the impression it was from mixing a synthetic into the resi with the merc oil. I had the same thing happen in an outboard lower unit...sludgefest
