TRS Dipstick - Where to find them?
 
Am looking for a pair of dipsticks for my outdrives. Saw them for like 30 bucks new, but would prefer to get some used if people have these laying around.

In the meantime, how much oil should be in the reservoirs themselves?

3 quarts in the drive and 1 in the reservoir. I think I may have a couple at my work shop out in the country. Be going out there sometime in the next couple of days and I'll let you know.

when filling up through the bottom of drive, will it automatically fill the reservoir too? or do you need another quart after it starts coming out of the breather at top of drive?

I've always filled through the bottom. Fill until it comes out the vent hole. Replace the vent plug then continue to fill from the bottom until it reads "full" on the resivoir dipstick.

best way to fill them is from the top cap remove the 4 bolts and just poor it in untill full. We raced them for 4 years doing it that way and never had an issue. Also a good way to inspect top bearings and such. Filling them from the bottom will take you a week, LOL also I have couple extra dip sticks i think. Second that. Also eliminates the big mess from filling from the bottom. I just dump 3 in the drive and one in the reservoir and go with it. Be sure to leave the top cover off until you have filled the reservoir also so the line between the reservoir and drive has a chance to fill.

No need to worry about air pockets on a TRS like other outdrives? Kind of leary after I blew up an upper cause the check valve was not working and I did not get enough oil into the upper. Built up to much pressure.

Dipstick from a Merc Trans ll can also be used in the drive lube reservoir if you cut it down some.

You can fill the reservoir when pumping in from the bottom. Yes you will need another quart when it starts coming out the upper vent hole. At this point you will need to put the vent screw back in and then pump in the 4th quart. The hole where the lube enters the drive from the reservoir is at the same level as the upper vent screw. You would be pumping it in faster than it could flow through the line to the reservoir. It takes forever for that 90wt to move through the 3/8" line to the reservoir. Best way if you are going to pump it in would be to pump in until it comes out the upper vent hole. Then fill the reservoir until it starts to come out the vent hole again. Probably save you a half hour or more over pumping it into the reservoir. Keep in mind the upper vent hole and full on the dipstick are at the same level. Wait a couple hours and check the level on the dipstick after the lube has had a chance to balance out between the drive and reservoir.
