External Steering with Newer Sweptback???
Anyone running an external setup with the newer sweptback? I assume there are some but have yet to see any pics. I'm wondering if the standard stuff fits and if so how it looks. As I understand it the rear portion of the upper pops off but I have not had my hands on a sweptback yet so not sure.
Basically I have both a steering cap and wingplate for a std B1 and now looking at a newer sweptback. Wondering what would fit and look best. |
I have latham on mine. top mount. the old mount changed the rear cap as you are talking about. the new style mounts on top and includes a threaded hole for a drive shower. I don't think the swept drive has a rear cap you can take off.

Good point, I forgot about the third style (top mount plate). Everything I have works off the rear cap or mounting studs.
On this boat I would be switching from a rear cap style to the top mount. Will have to see if it would work with the current ram locations, hate to have to move anything. |
Rear cap from old style will fit & work fine. The profile will not match visually however.
Clearance for top mount from old style might be a problem due to the fins on the new style top cap. All the fasteners are in the same place. |

Also, is their any strength concerns with a top mount? Especially if you have to shim it up to clear the cooling fins of the top cap??? Seems the rear cap or even the wingplate style would be far stronger. |
I just put a full Imco external setup on my boat. We chose to put the tie bar lower on the saddles to help counteract the torque on the drives.

If you double click the picture above it will take you to my flickr account. Double click it again when you get to flickr and then choose "view all sizes" then view original size. You can zoom in and clearly see how the steering caps on my drives are setup. These are the new sweptback XR's. |
