Hydrolic pressure and where can I find....
 

Hi - I have 2 questions I am hoping you can help me with. I recently acquired a 73' Monza and I have 2 questions I hope you can help me with.

1) it has a volvo penta 280 outdrive - swedish made PN 850929-7952, serial # 901594 and the trim tab on the unit is worn and I would like to replace it. I have been to a few marine shops and searched online and we cannot find a replacement part. Any idea where I can find a replacement?

2) the boat has hydrolic steering, trim tabs & outdrive. It seems to be a pressurized canister unit with something much like a tire stemvalve on top. The unit has developed a very minor leak in the steering box. I am thinking of putting some lucas oil power steering fluid/leak stop in the resevoir to see if this stops the leak. If I do so I need to pressurize the unit. Everyone I have talked to says I need to bleed the lines and should not re-pressurize. What is the right thing to do and if it needs to be pressurized, how much pressure should be put in the unit?

Your steering is made by hynautic, your reservoir should be charged to 30 PSI.

Use seastar fluid or mil spec 5606 fluid. I have the same setup on my Magnum. I can e-mail you the bleeding instructions if you would like.

If you don't use the right fluid it will increase the steering ratio numerically. more turns lock to lock.

I screwed up! ...now what?
 

I was trying to load a big and heavy battery into a battery box when I missed slightly causing the batter to kick back towards me and in the process the battery slammed into the hydraulic fluid level gauge and cracked that sucker in half (and soaking me in a geyser of hydraulic fluid). Oh so attractive!

I was able to re-fabricate the piece using some high pressure tubing I picked up at the home depot. I have no idea how suitable my replacement is, it could last forever or go out at the worst time possible so if there is reason to properly replace it, any idea where I can find the part?

The piece I broke is the plastic straw like piece that indicates how full the reservoir is.

So, worry about it, or not, if so, thoughts on where to get a replacement?

Also, if I go back in to make repairs, I should probably bleed the system and replace fluids, can anyone point me to directions on how to do this?

unless you are worried about the spot where the new piece attaches to orig stuff, the repair is probably gonna last...

I thought so too, sometime a bit of reassurance is all you need.
