Frozen bearing carrier
one of my drives made a milkshake of its fluid last time out, and i figured it wouldnt be a bad idea to tear it down inspect everything and reseal it.
upper went smooth really no issues but the bearing carrier is frozen in the lower. I tried to warm it a bit with a map gas torch with no succes tried spraying penetrating oil on iut and letting it sit for 2 days.... no luck.... i made a puller to go against the case and tighten down the prop nut to pull the shaft and carrier out. has anyone tried something like this ? gonna give it a shot tomorrow or sunday. dont want to break the housing since someone welded nose cones on and i dont feel like replacing both lowers |
I made a carrier puller by taking a 18" or so long angle steel and notching 1 side so it could slip between the carrier webbs and hook onto the back side of the carrier. Welded a peice of pipe to the other end of the angle (like a handle) and would use it as a place to hit it with a hammer. Worked like large slide/impact hammer with no force being appied to the housing or prop shafts. Worked like a charm.
