Alpha One Leaking oil
 

I have a buddy that has a 96 boat with a Alpha one. I think Gen II. Drive oil is leaking from the upper gear case were the shift shaft goes through the upper case. I am not sure if this is a simple fix or what. I have not messed with alot Alpha drives alot. Thanks for the help and idea's....

Might be just a bad 0-ring

Yeah but where? Looking to see if this is a easy fix or should he take it to a dealer..

Shift shaft seal most likely. Has he pulled the drain plug and checked for water in the gear case? Fairly simple fix.

dont have any alpha knowledge but bravo's are very simple to remove would not think alpha would be different

Thanks, looks like we will be removing the drive this weekend hopefully it is a easy fix

Seems like an odd place to leak...there is a small reservoir in that area that would be flooded for oil to come up the shaft...indicating the drive may have some water in it...
The seal is likely contained in a collar with a spanner slot so you'll have to make up a simple tool.
I would replace the upper gearcase seal where the drive shaft enters...and a new water pump (if needed) when you've got the case split..Don't forget the quad ring for the joint...

Its leaking from the upper case. with the drive up you see the shift shaft. The area above that is where the oil is. It is the connection that turns the lower gear case for forward/reverse. It looks like the upper lever has a hook on it that connects to the lower gear case. Hope that makes sense

Oil isn't running down the drive shaft from the upper seal and down into the water pump and shift shaft area when tipping the drive up?

I've never had shift shaft seal leak- not a lot of motion there or wear... fwiw...

You should be able to see a small section of drive shaft with a flashlight...at top of that area is the upper seal I described...

Two styles the older one is dry with splines packed in grease and newer units or replacement gearsets use a "wet" double seal. Splines are then emersed in drive oil...
