Cone clutch failure????? What do you guys think??

Ok. Last nite heading across the lake, running pretty hard. All of a sudden, I'm on one motor. I come off plane, start the motor back up, I go to shift in forward, and nothing, first I think, well twisted a prop shaft off. The prop is now on the bottom. I shift into reverse, the drive shifts. Well, good news. I didnt lose the prop. So I have reverse, but not forward. Cone Clutch right????? Btw the way. Boat is a 32 Skater, 525sc. Whats everyone think???

Last season I blew the bottom out of the forward gear and had the same symptoms. Bravo's?

I have had that happen by taking the teeth off the driven forward gear in the upper but reverse gear for that drive looked okay .If you pull the upper plug and its got a lot of metal then it is most likely the case.

I did pull the plug. Just a very small amount of metal...

Then you probably took the clutch cup off the forward driven gear.

What year are the drives? If they are after 2000 or 2001 and SN starts with OM.. then you have the thick floored gears and have not pushed a floor out. At least I have not seen one since they upgraded the gears in those days.
Only way to know is to tear it down and look. If the SN is OL or later, it is probably a floor.

+1.

I had the cup shear off the gear.

After looking at it closer, I found the gear was cracked between teeth.

Sorry bro that sucks.

Sure sounds like you sheared the cup off the gear that would be considered your forward gear, I broke the original thin floored one on my boat years ago and one xr the same way, the xr that broke was modified by Max word back when they first started selling the xr stuff to retro into earlier drives and they had modified it for a bigger bearing which weakened it, Smitty
