XR no forward or reverse and no grinding
 

Yesterday took the boat out 31 awesome with xr drives. Let the boat warm up put the boat in gear idle about 100 yards ease up on plane and run about a mile at about 30 to 45 mph I start coming of plane and my right drive "rotating counter clockwise" looses propulsion didn't hear any bang, crunch, or clatter just felt like the prop fell off. I raised the Drive and the prop is still there. Got to the dock lifter the shifter out of the console and cable still attached. Shifter moves to forward and reverse. Both cables are moving on the bracket mounted in the engine compartment. But no forward or reverse. Loaded the boat up shifter in neutral prop spins freely in both directions with no noise or hang ups, forward spins freely counter clockwise but smoot resistance clockwise. Dont think I actualy got it into reverse but spun freely both ways. Need help on what I need to look at.

take a look down behind your motor while its running. see if your input shaft is spinning with your coupler

No metal in lower unit gear lube

There's two throttle cables. One coming from your gimbal and another coming from your throttle. Did you check both? If your coupler let go, you'd hear it.

The cable from the shifter goes to a bracket on the inside of the transome and it moves. The cable from that bracket to the gimbal moves also, not sure if maybe that cable broke. But it pushes forward fine

Both times I've lost both directions without any
BOOM, it's been due to a broken shaft (1st: propshaft, 2nd: vertical shaft)

all I felt was the rev limiter kickin in at almost 6000 rpms !

Disconnect shift cable going to outdrive from bracket. If cable moves easy, then outdrive needs to come off. Could be that cable broke or I had a screw come loose in the outdrive connected to the shifting shaft. 2 years ago had that problem. So locktite, replaced fluid in outdrive and was off again.

Remove the back cap and look at the linkage.. Check the bolts in the shift rod, one in linkage and one in shift cam fork, as Turbo said.
