Upper drive gear toast, now what?
My bravo 3 upper gears went out, metal shavings everywhere. Should I have it fixed? If so, is the lower going to need a rebuild? Or should I buy a used unit, upper and lower?

I would take the lower apart to check it and clean it,prolly will need new bearings, lots of bravo parts around used, I have some used uppers if you need them.

Really depends on what you want to spend among other things. How old is the unit, single or twin boat? Just wonder if it has the steel towers in the upper. Seen plenty blow the upper and not totally pollute the lower but why chance it? Absolutely tear down the lower! Crazy not to, besides if it has a lot of time on it you'll want new seals and prop roller bearings anyway. If it failed partly due to age there are a few other things you might as well check while it's down for repair.
Looks like a single application? |
It's a baja single engine, early 90's outdrive. I wanted to upgrade to bravo 1 anyway so I guess I'll look for a used unit. What should I look for in a used unit? How much should I pay?
