bravo II lower unit cracked
 

Hello all, first post. I've read threads on here for quite a while and now I have a problem. I own a '92 sea ray weekender with a volvo dpx415 / mercruiser transom / bravo II x diesel drive. Yes, I put together that combo.

Anyway, I went to change the fluid in the drive today, and saw this little gem. I have no idea how long it's been like this, it doesn't leak fluid, there's no play in the shaft, no vibration at speed. I can pull it apart with two fingers and don't want to shear it off. I know the solution is to either get a new lower unit or change out the case, but I don't have that kind of money right now. How serious are we talking here? Thanks guys, Justin

I think you will be better off replacing the case. If you weld it, it could turn into a can of worms. Not sure if you have someone who is good on a tig welder that could attempt it. If money is short, a good welder, may be able to patch it up for a while. But it broke for a reason and unless the weld is a good one, then it may break again.
I guess I would give it a try. If it doenst work, then replace the case. The area that is cracked looks to be in the exhaust area and not into the lube section. Although if you weld it, it may cause issues with the oring that seals that area in front of the bearing carrier. To be welded correctly the part would need to be removed and ground down to expose clean metal and then welded in place. It then may need to be machined to clean up any warping the welding has created. This is why I think it could turn into a can of worms.
If you can find someone that has done this repair before and is confident about doing it again. I would try it. Otherwise, save your money till you can find a new case.
