Noisy B1 after reinstall

Low hour 2001 B1. Sounds like knocking/rattling in the upper. Got the boat in pieces so no idea how it was before, but previous owner was not a hot-rodder.

Haven't put it in the water yet but it shifts in/out of Fwd/Rev without issue. No change in noise between shifts, no crunching etc. Fluid looks brand new. The shift bracket was removed from the riser, but no cable changes/adjustments were made while removed, so I didn't do a cable adjustment after the install.

I think my Bravo manual is an early edition since it doesn't mention a remote drive reservoir, and a procedure to bleed after install. I just loosened the upper screw on the drive until fluid flowed.

The drive sounds like the clutch may not be engaging/disengaging completely. Will I be able to tell when I pull the rear cap? How high is fluid level? Am I looking at losing/draining a ton of fluid to pull the rear cap?

Thanks,
Michael

Prob a bad cone clutch, take the rear cap off and look while someone starts it and puts it in gear, put pressure on shift cam see if it stays engaged with pressure applied

I had a similar noise in mine and Dick said it could be the shift shaft rattling.

Bad cone clutch would suck, shift shaft sounds much better. :D

I'm thinking I need to drain the fluid before I pull the rear cover?

Just a little bit you wanna leave some in the lower, what year is the drive? I have a 98 and newer clutch I'll sell you if you need it
