how do you center a Merc coupler?

the old style that goes on studs to the flywheel bolts has a ring that sits in the crank center, like a pilot bearing. the newer style that bolts to 3 clutch pressure plate bolts doesn't. i put it on finger tight and it has 25 thousandths of play up and down. i can eyeball it and get it close to the middle of the play, but i have no idea if the middle of the play is anywhere near the center of rotation. anyone have any suggestions?

you cant center it just put it on and be done with it .25 thou is nothing the center is just set in rubber under torque it will move anyways .just make sure you ck the alignment when done

since i asked, i bolted a steel plate to flywheel cover, took my cheapy dial indicator and set it up on it. and found my eyeball centering job is off by 2 to 3 1000ths. i like that a lot better than .025.

gettin to critical here . wait till you put the flywheel housing on and see how much play you have in the dowel pins .bottom line when done is the alignment bar make sure it slides in good

Mine came with 3 tapered screws to center it , snug them up and put the others in .
