Mike,
There are two different shims on the new style (OW) case. Wire shims on the pinion bearing (bearing race has the spacer built in) and shim/races that the thrust bearrings ride on.
You need the tools to measure pinion depth and the shaft/flag and dial indictor mount to measure gear lash. That is the only good way to setup the gears properly. If you can get your hands on a Supplement #28 from Merc, it explains the procedure to measure gear lash.
Hope that helps.
Dick

If you have 27/32 gears the back lash is 0.011 - 0.016 but like Mr. Gadgets posted you must set pinion depth first on the new cases. U-joint pinion shims come from .028 to .040, no shim starting point is a .035. First time doing a new style upper with manual and proper tools will take some extra time and a lot of looking at the manual. Also if you are hunting for #28 Supplement they are a two volume set makes sure you get the one that covers uppers.
Forget to mention the thrust race for new cases come .058 to .067 the book doesn't give a starting point, I would start with around .062 ( thats around the middle ) The new shims don't come in packs like the old ones so you have to buy each one individually pinion shims run $3.00 - $4.00 ( 13 different ones )each list and thrust bearing races list for $ 30.00 each (10 different ones). I keep one of each pinion shim and two of each thrush bearing on hand, so I can finish doing an upper and not have to measure than go hunt down shims. I don't think you find to many dealers with the shims in stock.

Disregard what in put about #28 Supplement it Bravo supplement #39 that has two volumes.
