bravo lower broke??
I think I blew a lower on a Bravo 1X, 05 baja 25 ol. going across the water and the prop just stopped turning. can turn prop shaft and hear grinding in lower. Drained oil and it is full of metal flakes. So I assume the lower is toast. does that mean the upper is going to have issues if I just get a new lower, or can I just drain it, put on a new lower , refill and go for broke? Thanks for any help

you probibally took some teeth of the ring gear&pinion gear im the upper, the whole drive will need to be disassembled to clean all the metal out and all bearings&races will need to be inspected,if your lucky the upper case is reuseable, but it never works that way for me,i have destroyed several b1 drives beyond repair.

Even if the lower is the culprit, the lower gears act like an oil pump and flow oil to the upper.. Chances are it was self destructing for a while and sent metal every where.
If you do bolt on a new lower, it would more than likely be ruined by the metal in the upper, doesnt take much. So the best thing would be a complete tear down and inspection.

That is what I was afraid of, the boat only has 140hrs on it, I change the drive oil every year, and take it pretty easy, dont understand why it shelled. It is deffinately the lower, and there is deffinately metal in the upper too. Very frustrating.
