Out drive won't shif into gear

I have a Imco out drive. An yesterday it was working fine. An I made a big pass at 120. Then when I slowed down an stopped an shut the boat off an pu it into neutral. Everything was fine. Then I started it again. It would not go back into drive at all. I finally got it into drive. An the boat got us back to e doc but it still will not shift into an out of drive. Any help I can get please thanks

Open the top cap or back cap and see if there is any damage. My guess is you will find metal chuncks interfering with the shifing mechanism. Hope I'm wrong.

Check your cable and see if its that first. Then pop the cap like Revd Up said.

Drain some of the lube and pull the back cap, check the detent ball on the plunger. Sometimes the ball will fall out and cause what you are describing. When you pull the drain plugs to lower the fluid, check them for metal. Any chunks or flakes and it indicates damage.
When you were able to get it into gear, did it make any noises? Did it seem to work ok, just not able to get it out of gear? Another thing to remember, the Bravo drives do not like to be shifted without the input shaft turning..
Hope that helps.

+1, I've had the same problem before and found the detent ball spring mechanism to be jamed. Very simple fix to pull the cap and the detent ball mechanism. Pull it and clean it out real good or replace...........their like 4-5$. I cleaned mine out and no problems after 3 years of use.

Check the cables would be my first guess.then check for metal in the gear oil
