IMCO SC Rebuild Question
 

I have a quick question about my IMCO SC -2" I'm rebuilding...

I have a set of stock gears (1.50) out of a standard length lower, an IMCO -2" vert shaft and have had all new bearings and races pressed in. The only bearing I left was the roller bearing in the case as it was already new.

The problem is the bearing, now that I'm putting it all back together, is too large for the race on the vert shaft.
The vert shaft race is the same diameter as the stock shaft race, which had needle bearings instead of the pressed in roller bearing on the SC.

I'm trying to figure out what roller bearing I need (Part Number if it's a Timken etc) to fit the race on my shaft? For info, it's a 1.5" (1.469") OD race and the shaft is IMCO P/N: BRV 122 K277 03-03.

Or is it better to get a larger OD race for the shaft instead?

Call dave @ IMCO the lower bearnig must match the shaft race. There are 2 opt.

Imco no longer offers the caged bearing and race, as far as I know. They have gone back to the Merc bearing and race. The race that presses on the shaft has a radius ground in the end so it will seat on the step on the shaft. If you use a stock merc race, it will go on most of the way, but swell to a larger OD and cause problems. You can create that radius in the lathe, but Imco sells them already radiused.

The old bearing was a source of problems. The housing for the bearing would break and lodge in between the gear and case.

We have the race in stock, but you do need to make sure the radius matches the shaft.

Ghostrider as Dick wrote use the stock Mercruiser bearing & race .
the driveshaft in the pic looks like an early style , the later ones are far superior . if $ can be had .

So from what I can gather, I'll need to press that existing caged bearing out and get the correct diameter race and bearing, which Mr Gadgets tells me it is a Torrignton bearing which requires a special tool to get in and out of the lower... And the fun never stops!

Waconda what do you need me to confirm to select the right bearing and race? Is it the exisiting race diameter ont he shaft?

Merc Race 1.465 OD
Imco Race 1.562 OD Part # on race IR 7285
Imco Bearing is a SJ 7285
Both the bearings have the same OD, Just the race is different.

So then why is the bearing race on my IMCO shaft the 1.465 OD? If it's the wrong race, can you supply the correct IMCO race that will fit the bearing in my drive (which is the 1.562-ish ID)? So the IR 7285 race is just a thicker race than the stock one, allowing it to have the same ID as the Merc but the 1.562 OD so it fits the bearing cage of the IMCO, is that correct?
Please let me know if this is the right path or if anything else is required.
Also, can anyone provide any pics of this set up so I can compare it to mine?
Another question I just thought of is how do I get the existing race off my shaft if it is the wrong one?

Local knowledge where I live is non-exisitant so I have to do it all by pics and forum assistance!

Because the shaft was used with a merc bearing or is ready for the merc bearing. You can buy the Race to fit your caged bearing or just switch out to a merc bearing and use the race on the shaft.
To get it off the shaft just use a bearing splitter.
