Sorry to hear this.. what does the bearing surface on the gear look like? I take it this is the LH rotation drive?

weldcrane 08-14-2012 05:52 AM

left hand rotation is correct i take it this is not the first as imco is telling me

I have seen two of these at my shop so far this year... sorry to hear...

JustinD 08-14-2012 07:48 AM

I still can't believe this broke??? Thats alot of money for drives to have one break, and Bill is very conservative with his boat never beats up on it. Hopefully the guys at IMCO make it right for you Bill, gotta get back in the water this season.

Before the internet I was always told this every time I had something give out that I thought should not have. It is a lot harder now for companies to tell you that when you can find out that it is a common problem or design problem.

When my bravo drives fails I think I will stay away from these drives.

articfriends 08-14-2012 08:33 PM

Thats the first time I ever seen the upper gears from a SCX, what did they do just make everything identical to a Bravo but bigger right down to the cone clutches?

weldcrane 08-14-2012 08:36 PM

thats what they did but something let go top bearing

offshorexcursion 08-14-2012 08:45 PM

So sorry to hear àbout that. Those drives should be expected to last 500-1000 hours behind any properly maintained boat under 850 hp. Imco better man up and take care of you.

I bet there are other stories like yours but not everyone is on oso. There also are some good stories about this drive also.

Just sucks there is no good answer for drives!

Unlimited jd 08-15-2012 07:50 AM

I can't see them lasting 500 hours, the gears are still soft like an xr and will wear out/pit over time. Maybe 200-250 hrs. Regardless of that a bearing should not fail at less than 30 hours. Many others have had great success with this drive so let's see what they do.

The gears are from a mercury NXT transmission

So you have talked with Imco and they're telling you that it hasn't ever happened before with the SCX? Are they being helpful/supportive? Any chance they will replace it?

weldcrane 08-15-2012 06:41 PM

Nopper marine in Fairhaven Ma has taken the drive all apart cleaned boxed and shipped everthing that is ruined to Imco have been in contact with Dave there this will be a true test of customer support

letterrip 08-15-2012 08:24 PM

Interesting...
Because I am planning of going to SCX's for my winter upgrade.
Speaking from experience... That You are in the best, most honest hands with Nopper marine.
Hopefully Dave @ imco does his part.

racinfever 08-15-2012 09:46 PM

Do you have anymore info on the 2 you have seen? Pics? What boats they were on?

Did Imco do anything about the problem?

When I owned a Mobile tool business I learned a little bit while Touring the factory.

Impact sockets are actually softer then chrome sockets to absorb the shock, but they are also thicker. If you use chrome on a impact gun it will wear the gun out faster. If the Impact socket was to hard it would shatter. Just like fiberglass in a boat flexes so it does not crack over every wave.

So I do not think its fair to say "the gears are still soft like an xr" in a negative way. There is some engineering that goes into gears that neither of us know enough about.

Should there be a drive that last longer for us high performance boaters, YES. Should fuel be lower, YES. But we the people choose to keep paying so why should anyone change that?

offshorexcursion 08-16-2012 11:59 AM

Oceanoutlaw.....Pretty sure they are not the same Gears as the NXT transmission.

I have read (but have no proof) that the NXT Transmission uses parts from the Bravo XR but mounted sideways instead of vertical.

offshorexcursion 08-16-2012 12:11 PM

Weldcrane, Just had a thought....

Did you buy the Upper and lower at the same time New, or did you install a used SC lower to the new SCX upper?

I have already explained how I hope Imco takes care of you, but a used lower could have contaminated the new upper, and even if you say it did not, how is Imco to know that?

You might be the greatest guy around but unfortunately there are others who ruin it for the rest of us!

Good luck

weldcrane 08-16-2012 01:31 PM

The lowers are sc completely rebuilt by nopper marine when those uppers were installed and there is no wear on the lower gear set which has been completely torn down and cleaned from the upper case issue . Parts are in transit to Imco

Huh ???? NXT uses Bravo XR gears and clutch

Unlimited jd 08-17-2012 08:39 AM

I understand why xr gears are soft, same as Richmond pro gears for a 9". Just sucks that's what it takes to make it work and can be very costly every couple years. I'd rather have a used wet sump 6 than rebuild these every other year at $4000 each

Wildman_grafix 08-17-2012 08:51 AM

How much is a SCX upper and a SC lower new cost?

weldcrane 08-20-2012 08:23 PM

imco has the broken parts now hopefully they send out good parts soon lets hope !!!!!

weldcrane 08-21-2012 07:58 PM

spoke with dave today at imco says he is shipping all the parts needed to get me up and running

Mr Gadgets 08-21-2012 08:44 PM

Good news!

dennis r 08-21-2012 09:02 PM

for free I hope

Wildman_grafix 08-21-2012 09:40 PM

Good news! I have always thought everyone can make a mistake, it's how they handle the mistake that matters.

smiklos@sunprint 08-22-2012 06:36 AM

Glad to hear this! I have always had good luck with Imco.
Steve

weldcrane 08-22-2012 07:07 AM

Just paying for shipping

offshoredrillin 08-22-2012 07:49 AM

Awesome, glad to see Imco stepping up. things happen as said above but man that's building customer confidence!
