Jack Shaft cover cracked

I have # 2 speedies and BW 72 trans missions. I just noticed these cracks in the jack shaft shields where they come up to the tailstock mounts- one on both drives.

Can I pull these shields out w/o having to remove the trans missions so I can have them welded?
