konrads 540 vs speedmaster #3

i have a older cig . has TRS drives . i want to install big power in it but afraid of the trs drives .

38 ft , 85 year , going to make 850-900 hp .

choices are konrads or trs/speedmaster ? which one would do .

konrads used 10k konrads guarante to 750 torque
speedmaster #3 7k used

both bolt on correct ?

Konrads bolt right on? speed masters require tail stock on trans change and plug transom and move engines and possible tail pipe reconfig depend on exhaust

Konrad cheaper

Neither is rated for the horse power so reliability will be questionable on either one

Why are they your only choices? For that HP and in a boat that heavy you are just asking for trouble IMO. Locate some used Arneson ASD-8. you can turn the drop boxes in for a staggered thrust line, and make just subtle changes to your set up. Now you have a drive that you won't ever have to worry about, and you can run modern props with the #6 shaft converter.

look what I found :) http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o47039-en.html

Make a call to Rik at arneson, let him know you found used, I think you will be surprised with the support and parts he can provide to help you with your project.

After google "boat rooster tail" on youtube :)

Those are cool but...

the tail stocks do not have a fin/skeg.

Need two more rams with the saddles.

Tough parts to find used and Twin Disc is pretty proud of them.

SSM III isnt a bolt on. Tailstocks need to be changed, move engines back a touch, install new gimbals, etc. Many boats have been converted. Mine was a TRS boat, and now it has SSM IV drives.

For the HP you are running, I would look for a 3A, or #5 drive setup. with 850-900 real horsepower, in front of a TRS in a 38 Flatdeck, you may want to keep spare drives in the cuddy to get a full day of boating in.

You might be able to get a regular #3 SSM to hold up behind your motors a little while if you don't see big water, and take it easy on them. Or tame the engine build down a bit, to the 700hp range, and they'll live a happier life. Unless you plan to spend alot of time REALLY setting that boat up, say with extension boxes, bottom blueprinting, high x dimension, trick 5 blade props, etc, 850HP a side wont do much for impressing the local go fasters. With 850's, and a conservative drive height on a older flatdeck bottom, my guess is low 80's on a good day.
