Every boat is different. My son tried a 2'' imco on his 98 Baja 24 outlaw, saw no improvement. I tried it on my 260 prowler. it let be turn a bigger wheel which picked up my cruise by 5 mph. Picked up about 3 mph at wot.

They work much better with higher HP. With stock engine boats it tends to help handling but not speed. It will lower your cruise speed using the same prop as before.
The more HP you have it tends to help more.

As I recall bob u have some good power in ur boat. Correct?

my drive is down more in 1994 they raise the drive up. and yes drpete3i have a 540 dart with 718hp. i am running in the 80in hot weather and best 86cooler air.at wot my boat is out of the water. it seem like i am on the drive with about a foot of the boat in the water. so i am not convice if the shorty will work for me. so far i have two guys that say yes. so now i got to find one. use i hope

Where do you live - I have two.
They have been on a few boats locally.

Tinkerer, what do you have Imco?

Email me at [email protected] I may be interested. I have standard Imcos on my boat and need to try shorties.

Do you have to trim a lot for max speed? If you do the drive will help.

Elite Marine 08-29-2012 07:39 PM

I do yes

depends if trimming is loosening the prop up or picking the bow and wetted surface on boat up. If your trimming to lossen boat up you may loose bow carrying leverage with a shorter drive. On my 272 Baja I was convinced that my drive was too deep and tried a 2" shorty based on the fact it goes the fastest with lots of trim ( my prop c/l is 7.5 inches BUT don't forget these boats have a pad on the bottom, in my case it hurt top speed and killed the handling of the boat, would barely carry the bow and bow steered like crazy. Put a 1"spacer in and it helped, put stock length drive back on and it was the best, also while testing boat tried to swap ends at mid 90's too from losing bite and I was lucky to not get ejected, sold that shorty!!!!! I also tried a ext box with same crappy results, Smitty
I think maybe over stock speeds but under real high speeds they might help.

If you live locally I have removed them from my boat a few times so that others can TRY them out.

Are these the speedmaster style? I'm running a B1 with a nose cone now. I hardly need any trim to run 90 but it gets a little squirrelly at times and I think a shorter drive will help. I'm an east sider but I'm out your way at least every other week.

Tinkerer 08-31-2012 08:20 PM

I think those velocities have a high X from the builder. If you don't have to trim much then a shortie probably won't help. you might try some different props. My drives are IMCO bravo style.

How much do you want for them?

Unlimited jd 09-06-2012 08:12 PM

I should have one for sale next week, whole drive or I'll sell just the lower for the right price

Tinkerer 09-06-2012 08:58 PM

My lowers may be for sale soon.
One of them will be getting rebuilt next week.
I may be buying -3 inch lowers soon.
Putting them on others boats was for free. That and a boat ride.

TROR 09-14-2012 05:46 AM

Thats cool Tinkerer that you do that for people! I think Imco should take note here and offer a test program similar to Bblades test props. If they take money for someone to try out a drive/ shorty lower with a cc for damage deposit, people could try em out and Im sure if they like, they would buy. Would also give them some used/ rebuilt units to sell to people that they would probably never sell to new. Just sayin.
