72c hp rating?

How much power will stock 72c green tag borg Warner transmissions hold? I have a mint low hour set for my hawk just wondering if I should start researching upgrades before installing.

I ran 600hp through stock 72c Trans for 12 years. Never a problem

Good to know, thank you!

Run a temp gauge on it.
BW's will start slipping quietly before they are going to fail.
Usually you will see the oil temp rise when this happens.
Put the temp gauge BEFORE the oil cooler so it doesn't mask what's going on inside.

When you do see the temp creep up, you know it's time to open them up and freshen them up. At that time you can consider adding clutch packs to it. There are several upgrade paths in escalating cost brackets you can explore. Thinner driven plates and friction plates can be used without any machining - THEN you can add machining to removeable parts and get even more plates in it - THEN you can get the cases machined as well, which allows the monster upgrades.

Lube temp is your best indicator of what's going on in there.
Learn what your cruise trans temp is, and take note of what your WOT trans temp is.
Anytime you see those numbers higher than usual, do not ignore.

Who makes the clutch paks that you talking about?

mcollinstn 10-05-2012 04:00 PM

Huber and Bam both make upgrade kits, or will upgrade your drive for you.

Oh, a stock 72C in fresh condition is rated at 595 ft-lbs.
That's 200hp at 2000 RPM or 500hp at 4600 RPM or 600hp at 5600 RPM.

Carbon clutch discs will get you 10% to 15% more capacity.

call pete nopper, he did mine, machined it to. I have 10 or 11 disc now.

Alto makes the clutches. I am going to run them as is for now, and then upgrade as needed
