89 Bravo 1
I have this drive here that come off my Baja when I did my upgrades.has been sitting here in my shop for a couple years now. Was completely functional when pulled. Only problem I was experiencing was that it was getting aggravating to go from forward to neutral. Other than that,no issues. I would like to know what it would cost to get it freshened up or rebuilt. And also what it would cost to bring it to the XR level, as I anticipate increasing my hp. To about 650-700 on the Baja. All advice would be greatly appreciated.

An 89 is not a good base for upgrades. The lower unit is shorter than later lowers which makes them inefficient and there is no provision for the lube reservoir. You'd be better off starting with a early 90s bravo.

The upper case is also thinner in spots than the newer ones.. Pick an OM drive and it will already have the thick floored gears and all the latest oiling, etc.

Thanks Gentlemen, I have a later model on the boat now. I believe it's an 2006. Has the low water pick up. Guess I would be better off upgrading it and selling the 89 as is.

If it's just the cone clutch that is acting goofy (shift mechanism) it may be worth reviving and keeping as a spare in an emergency. I don't think you will get much for it trying to sell it.
If it were me, I'd look into getting it back to where I was comfortable using it as a spare in emergencies only, like if you break a drive on July 2nd and you want make sure you are boating on the 4th. All you would have to do is drain your drive fluid reservoir in the boat, and make sure you are really easy on it, and it would get you through a holiday weekend if needed. |
Use the 2006 drive. Add an XR top cap and imco 1 1/4" propshaft conversion and you have made your 2006 drive a very good drive in my opnion.

Very good advice gentlemen. I had already thought about keeping it as a spare. Blue Thunder, what would be a ball park figure to do what you recommended with my current drive (06) ?
