SSM service in the mid-west?

Looking to have my #4's gone through and regeared but would like to keep from having them shipped.I'm located in north-central Illinois.

Smitty 04-01-2013 08:22 AM

I know a guy, waiting for a call back to see how busy he is right now.

He is in Northern Illinois close to Wisc. border. Probably 2.5 hr drive for you.

ICDEDPPL 04-01-2013 09:00 AM

I`d be interested on how good this guy is too.

Mine were done at speedmasters a few years ago, looking at the slips there must be quite a few golden o rings in these drives!

Not tryin to bum wrap ole Mel, but he aint cheap. My one friend, sent his #6's in to him for a refresh. After a month or so, he was quoted around 25k to go thru both of them. Mel said everything was junk. Needless to say that wasn't cool with my buddy, so he went and picked them up and paid for the tear down. Off they went to Craig Collabella, both drives rebuilt for around 12k if I recall. I don't know what ole Mel was doin for the extra 13g. I know that he was charging full list price for every part inside the drive according to the estimate. The rebuilds from Collabella worked out great, and saved my buddy a ton of dough.

My other buddy sent Mel a pair of #4's that were supposedly in good shape, to have gone thru and checked out for preventative maintainence. Mel again said that everything was junk, wanna say that bill was about 15k.

My guess is Riggs wont chance anything. He's gonna replace all of it, whether it needs it or not. Your gonna get a good product when he's done.Which from a business standpoint, I can understand that. From a consumer standpoint, if my gears and shafts are in good shape, I wanna run them. In this economy, I think open check books are a thing of the past for most.

Jim

Heard good things about Dubbert in the past.

ICDEDPPL 04-01-2013 11:58 AM

That's the problem with sending stuff around the country, if the guy can't be trusted, they just tell you anything.

That's not something I want to hear.

Smitty 04-01-2013 05:51 PM

My guy said no to the SSM drives. He is a Bravo and TRS guy only.

As I said above, Doug down at LOTO is awesome.

Riggs told me they no longer service 3s 4s or 5s due to availability of parts.they even got rid of their tools supposedly when i told him i had the gears coming.

Rbesola 04-01-2013 06:00 PM

None the less Gary kollofski set me up with Craig Colabella and he sounds like a straight forward guy.also rather reasonable as long as there's no surprises other than the upper gear sets.

That's Odd. Considering Gary K. has all the new gears and propshafts available for them, most bearings I was told were shelf bearings available thru a bearing supplier.

Anything wrong with your drives now RBesola? With the new Net forged gears, and 26 spline propshafts available, I think the IV's that are still around can be upgraded to take some serious power.

One drive the lube is metallic the other fine.seems like an upper gear issue.turning the prop by hand you can feel a very slight click that moves the same distance with every turn.they're also both geared at 1.31or 1.33 and was told they were fresh 1.50s with about 12 hours when i bought them last fall.either hes a sheister or clueless.needless to say never take anyone's word for something.

MILD THUNDER 04-01-2013 07:12 PM

Have you removed the upper cap to take a look at the upper gears? Wouldn't hurt just to see what's going on ? Easy to do. But ya. 1.33 really isn't ideal for a top gun.

Dubberts took great care of me 10 years ago when I decided not to put the third quart of gear lube in one of my TRS's during it's first gear lube change.

So what would be the cost to go through a III and do seals?

tnt1 04-02-2013 03:30 PM

sounds like the upper gear set is missing a tooth or two if you need gears talk to gary he can set you up

What is wrong with 1.33? I was told that is the strongest set up.

That particular gear is a spiral cut gear that Mercury used before they came out with the straight cut, net forged gears for the #3A and #5 drives. The straight cut forged gears are up to 100% stronger than the spiral cut gears.

Gary
