Crack in lower below bullet

Hi guys, I need some advice please.

I have a crack just bellow the bullet area of my XR, it runs probably 4-5 inches long.
Question is how do I repair this? Weld it or replace the lower?
If I decide to weld it should all of the internals be pulled out?
Need some guidance, thanks!!

Mike

I think youy should at least replace the case, and figure out how the water got in there, and check if the rest of the parts are still good, (not rusty). Usally when you have water in your drive it will rust the bearings and parts in the upper first, so be sure to have it all checked out. If you do decide to weld it leave the forward bearing race and bearing carrier in to help keep things round. If you need anything give me a call 3156239583. JIM

I have welded lots of them with sucsess. but if the crack is new or around the thrust bearing race i wouldn't. it will shrink and not shim up right and will not last.

Thanks for the replies.
The crack follows the bottom and length of the bullet. The drive has not taken on any water.
Ill try to get to the boat this week to take a picture.
I guess it would be similar to welding on a new skeg?

My thought was you had a lower that already had a skeg repair done to it and it is failing. If you get it welded make sure to take it to someone who is experienced with this welding and repair. I've had several welded on and have yet to have one stay put. I ended up getting a different case. If it is just cracked though and has never been welded on you should be able to have it welded up by a skilled alum welder.
