Alpha ss

Hi, has anyone ever ran a baja 240 sport with an alpha SS outdrive? I bought the boat this way however have never been able to get the speed that I would expect to get. I have very little trim before prop blows out. I have a 454 mag and a 21P 4blade. Getting about 58 mph on GPS. Per baja with 300hp 454 and stock drive ran 57 on radar. My thoughts are either drive is too short or wrong prop. Any ideas?

I believe the ss is 2 inches shorter than a regular alpha. My guess is you need to run more pitch. I'm no prop expert though so it's just a guess really.

Ya I always thought it was 2 inch shorter but now I'm reading that its 2.75 inch shorter.

Boat has a factory high X dimension. You would be faster with a stock alpha on it.I have have a boat that has a low x dimension and I need ss if you think of selling e mail me at [email protected] Thanks JOHN SR

ya that's what I'm starting to think, I have vacation early July and no time to find new drive, I'm going to try a few more props on my trip if I have no luck, which is what I expect, It will prob be for sale ill let u know.

I have a couple nice drives ,What ratio you looking for.JOHN SR

I'm thinking 1.50 or 1.60.

I blew up an Alpha SS last year. You want the 1.5 or 1.36 (or 32, cant remember) gear ratio. All big block alpha came with the 1.3X ratio from the factory.

You need to try different props. What 4 blade are you running? The SS is 2 5/8" shorter than a std alpha. I had one on my 185 Searay and if was the best thing I ever bough for it. You might want to try a Mirage or Tempest prop. The Tempest is what carried the bow the best on my boat.

+1, that if he has a trus ss drive and someone did not put a nose cone on his current drive..

Cape dont let anyone scam you out of that drive,,its worth about 2200-2500 bucks, like mentioned try another prop,,they like a little bigger prop like a 15.5'' diameter,if your slipping this will help..

ACrooks69 06-17-2013 11:17 PM

I don't think a 15.5" prop will clear the cavitation plate. 15" or 15.25 may be the biggest. My 14 5/8 Tempest was pretty close.

Ya from what I'm reading they are worth $2000 plus, if I measure from center of prop shaft to cav plate will that measurement jive with the prop size telling me how large I can go?

ACrooks69 06-21-2013 09:25 AM

Pretty much yes. Might want to measure to the underside of the torque tab zinc. I assume there is just the plate there and no tab.

The cape 06-21-2013 11:04 PM

Correct no tab.
