My xr lowers are the dwp as well and I go through impellers every year, it never seems to fail.
I have also burned both impellers back to back by one day, and I have sea strainers.

If the lowers are DWP and you run high you need to install stainless plugs in the upper water pick ups, both sides, both drives. Start with half or block them completely, at speed the LWP provides enough raw water flow, furthermore at speed if even one of those side pick up holes are exposed (as in above the water line) you are airating the impeller and accordingly burning them up creating an overheat condition.

I have always put on a little grease to help priming - what is the problem with grease should I stop?

Petroleum distillates degrade rubber compounds, it's ok to do that if you do it and run it immediately, but dont do that at the end of the season and then store the boat. Use soap, Ivory hand soap with the moisturizers is slick stuff.

Good information to know, thank you!

I have the Merc low water pickup drives on the Donzi, the ones with the water intakes just under the bullet.

Curious what year your Bravo drives are and if they have the "Performance" sticker on them? I believe in 1999 you could buy the "Performance" drive version with two options, one was with BOTH side water inlets and nose cone inlets, and then a second option with only (4) nose cone water inlet holes. I could never figure out if "Performance" meant any of the internals were different but I think that they were identical to a standard Bravo One with the exception of the two water pick up options.

they are the original drives to the boat. The dont have any indication of HP or anything like that. I was told it is an HP drive and gimbal and with that it has a heavier gimbal ring and the gears were treated in some way but otherwise standard Bravo. This was with the 525SC's that are in the boat. Not sure whats true or not but i have never really had any probs with the setup. The lowers only have the holes on the bullet. On looking at the HIN the boat is a 99
