Even if the parts in the "baby king" lower are supposed to be a little bigger ,It is still a clutch dog style lower ...and the same barely adequate (for high load) upper as a standard cobra. My point on King Cobra's (cone clutch) is it's getting hard to find anything for them and they have a different transom assembly .I still call the "baby king" just a cobra. If you had good luck with one ,good .I've had too much power in front of an alpha before and it lived because I knew what I had.

I put 470hp to mine and never broke it . I never said A king Cobra is the best there is but it is strong to a point . My suggestion to the op was to get him longer life and more dependability with what he has . Your purpose here seems to be to give me a hard time even after I proved to you that I in fact did what I said I did . The Baby King lower is much much stronger than a regular Cobra as per America Drive Service and myself being I have actually bought one and put it to the test . What have you done besides run your fockin mouth .

I'm home after a long day and having a drink .I was working on the cobra drives and baby "king"cobra's when they were new. Not giving you a hard time just stating what I know. If you want to argue ,we can ...I'd rather argue face to face
I'm glad you had good luck with your omc

I am happy you would rather be civil . While you are relaxing with your drink visit this site again and scroll down to what they have printed out in red . http://www.allamericandriveservice.com/OMCCobra.html All American Drive Service is well respected here on OSO and what they chose to put in print can also be taken seriously . Lets be perfectly clear , I am not an OMC fan because of the chit I went through with my drive . Now I tend to tell everyone " If it's not black take it back " Because of my experience with this drive I do however try my best to help those that I can that have OMC issues .

I have done a lot of work on cobra drives over the years & for stock use I wouldn't kick one off the back of a boat. For high performance use I personally would go with merc, just because of cheaper parts availability. My 4 wins had a 5.7 liter gm with a king cobra & that boat was a battle wagon!! It is still on the water to this day. My only advice would be to read the book, use gasket sealer on everything, and make sure to vacuum AND pressure test or it will leak. Good luck. Randy

I don't think I ever said I'd kick a properly functioning one off the boat. If I liked the boat and needed to spend real dollars on the cobra, I'd start considering an alpha transom assembly and drive. The transom cut is the same.
FWIW after omc upgraded the dogs, they worked all right for stockish power. It's just getting hard to find the old omc stuff at anything close to reasonable...Alpha parts are everywhere and cheap.
Obviously if you have a motor with good power,, neither of the above will stand the abuse.. Trade in the boat or go Bravo style stuff. Still the same transom cut, although you have to drill two more holes for mounting

Hey guys. I found a good drive at Harbor North marina right around the corner from my house. I had them go through it and reseal it. Looks like a new drive now. For $650 I got the drive and $350.00 to pull it apart, inspect and reseal. My game plan it take off the lower drive (of the blown drive),replace it with a good lower that I have, check the top drive, reseal and have a spare drive for the next time. I'll keep you posted.
I have had these drives on the boat for about 10 years now, change the fluid every year. I SHOULD have had them pressure/vac checked as part of my maintance and I didn't. Lesson learned........
