Good Morning

I'm pretty sure this has been posted here but couldn't find it. what is a comfortable H.P. level that a pair of borg Warner velvet drive transmissions and T.R.S. drives will handle. ended up getting rid of all the other boats i was messing with and bought a 1985 34' scarab no engines or drives. has a pair of Borg Warner 10-17-016's 1 to 1 ratio, Boat had Bigblocks and T.R.S. drives. It does not have thru hull but will when I put it all back together. Looking for decent speed and dependability.
the other question is if anyone remembers seeing the boat anywhere. name on it was Thunderball.

A Buddy of mine has a 1987 Scarab III. Originally had twin 370HP 454 mercs with 10-17 trannys. Engines now make around 425-450hp, trannys been holding up. It wouldn't be all that hard to convert to 10-18 trannys, since engines are out now. You will have to move the engines forward about an inch or so if I recall. Or, you can have them upgraded, I think they can be built to take a little more. Call Mark Berman at Bam Marine.

What kind of power are you putting in it?

I was planning somewhere around the 450-475 mark, not going to crazy with power

Had the clutches redone, upgraded to huber 925 spec. Ran 675 hp with the mistress, naturally aspirated. Never a problem, fluid cherry red type f

Huber always recommended type F fluid and wouldn't warranty his transmissions with anything else. Borg Warner did and I think still does, recommend Dexron . Go figure ! For extended high rpm tap the vent, install a hose barb and run Up to a small puke tank that will let the fluid settle back into trans when it can . The venting applies to 71's or 72's........

Can upgrade them to 7discs with a few tricks to handle that power no problem

Fwiw Borg Warner rated the 71's under 400hp and around 400#'s torque. I can tell you from experience they will take more...Doesn't cost a lot for a freshen up ,which you probably should do. You may want to look into what lil red said about upgrading ,for peace of mind

From Borg Warner-- capacity/ ratings ..... http://www.velvetdrive.com/7172.html 71's are on second pdf classifications/ratings
