Default TRS shaft coupler - what's the coil metal for and is this broken?

The coupler that connects the upper and lower shaft in a TRS has this metal round stock wrapped around it. Whats the purpose of it and I assume it's supposed to be connected on both ends and not broken like in the photo? Ugh!!

Oil slinger. Works to sling oil to the upper portion.

Yes it should be connected both ends.

Yup, that's the oil pump. when the shafts turn, it circulates the oil from lower to upper. Looks like you got some debris in there and tore it up.

Thanks guys! I will weld it so it's attached at both ends. The scratches are from a pair of plyers I used to hold the lower shaft so I could break the nut loose.

So I didn't pay attention to its orientation when I took it out! Does it matter which direction it goes in?
