Quick outdrive repaint question
I am refurbishing/repainting my merc outdrive. I have the upper case clear removed and black paint scratched with scotchbright pads. Some small areas are to bare metal, some original(greenish/gray) primer exposed and dull black on most.
Question is should i: A) just spray phantom black and clearcoat? B) primer all then phantom black? Or c) bite the bullett and completely strip to bear metal and start fresh, like i did the lower unit. I appericiate any experiences with this. Thanks in advance |
I had something similar. The lower unit had some dings, scratches -- it just looked like heck. I sanded it down with my random orbital sander- cleaned with a tack cloth, taped with Frog Tape- bought a zinc primer from Lowes and put about 4 light coats on it- letting it dry between applications. Then I must have put 10-12 very light coats of Mercury spray pain - got this from the dealer -- The day that I did this was warm and I was detailing the boat. I'd put a light spray on - do some other work and then another - I did this until I ran out of daylight! It looks like I knew what I was doing.. You would be hard pressed from knowing what was factory and what was done on the home front.

Ayuh,.... Is yer boat a trailer queen, or is it in the water most of the time,....
My boat is docked all summer,... I scuff it, 'n shoot it with Rustoleum Black each spring, before launch,... |
Right now it is a wrench wench, new purchase and trying to bring my "bird" back to the beauty it truley is.
Will be mainley a trailer queen because of my location. Any advice on how to proceed with this paint is welcome and appericiated. Thanks to all, happy boating |
I would use option B that you posted.

Phantom black in mercruiser brand removed from rattle can into hvlp gun small tip low pressure , will look oem and last
|
we sand it, then clean it real well, then use zinc chromate primer rattle can as it really fills in fine imperfections plus offers a corrosion barrier. then we use phantom black rattle can. You also buy phantom black thru Moeller - the same company that makes portable marine gas tanks. It is cheaper than thru Merc.
