Looking for he - removing Velvet drive installing Bravo
Installing a 454 that has a Velvet drive transmission that I am removing and changing to a Bravo drive. If I am correct I will need the flywheel, bellhousing, coupler, and starter ?? Not sure what or if I am missing something. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I would be interested if there are any parts available. The Velvet drive is available as well. Any input would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance !!

You do not need the flywheel, just bolt up the coupling to the one you have.

Since I can't use any of the parts from the drive I'll leave the starter, bellhousing, etc. on it if that helps Let me know, thank you !! |
I do believe you will have to remove the ring gear and flip it over. When the starter is on the back side the ring gear is turning the opposite direction. I have a coupler possible bell housing but i am not positive about that. And a backing plate.
I did the same to my 86 scarab panther that had trs drives on. Since you have to move the engine back you may consider raising the x dimension a couple inches |
Let me know about your parts, thank you. Question on the coupler - reading posts it appears there is a standard and a heavier duty version. Motor has a ProCharger and is making close to 600hp. Which coupler do you have ??

I have the standard one which i have ran 800 hp behind them without any issues. Not the extra one i have though

Don't forget you also have to move the engine back about 10'' to 12''.

1.91 ratio. this is a shaft boat engine you picked up. NOT a TRS velvet drive. is the boat you are installing it in already a Bravo boat? did it come with any of the parts? where is the starter? down low on the engine where it goes in a car-I/O? or on top pointing towards the transom? if that case the ring gear is in the wrong place for your needs. please tell me you are not converting a shaft boat to Bravo...

i didn't say it isn't a velvet drive, I said it isn't a TRS velvet drive. you see the round fat pumpkiney looking back half to the transmission, with a 4 bolt flange sticking out of it? that is the gear reduction part of the trans. TRS velvet drives are no gear reduction and the trans case is completely different than a shaft boat trans. this motor-trans was not in a TRS boat. I was joking about converting a shaft to I/O. Now, back to my question; is the boat you are installing this in already a bravo boat? or is it a trs boat, or what? you also need to double check the rotation of that engine. it could be opposite than what ALL I/O boats use.

I have all 3 .at the shop right now .yes they did make a bw fnr gearbox with a reduction unit that sent the power back v drive style . Trs has no internal f-r shift and usually runs steep gears to run big props .do tell why you wish to tackle this ,its do able , the velvet ,Trs combo has some good points depending on specific boat .

Yes coupler, starter flywheel and flywheel housing,. ,You'll also need a crank or pulley driven raw water pump. If the starter is on the rear port side then its LHR and you have no worries. If it was reverse rotation(RHR) the starter would be to the rear on the starboard side. if that is the case then it needs main and timing seals a camshaft , the pistons swapped 180* and a timing set.. or just reverse the shifter cable. Every reverse rotation from GM came with the same flat tappet camshaft so there's no upgrade unless it's custom made. It's a 50/50 shot if it's from a twin engine boat, but if it was from a boat with a single engine and drive package the chances are better that it's standard LHR . Good luck with it
