Failures with New Mercury Hi Performance gear lube in Bravo drives?

We recently started running the new lube. While testing admittedly used drives we have had 2 failures both under one hour of running on this lube. Both drives were well within the service window that has worked for us in the past. Both failures were bearing's in the uppers.
Thanks
Steve

When you say "new", are you referring to the black bottle/white label stuff? I bought Mercury High Performance Gear Lube last night and noticed it is a straight 90wt, not 80w90 like my leftovers from last season.

Edit- the leftover Premium is 80w90, the High Performance Plus from last year is a 90wt, but the label has definitely changed.

Thanks
Steve.

I was under the impression MERC outdrive oil is pretty well known for being lackluster regarding its ability to protect high output applications. Amsoil, NEO are proven. The merc stuff isn't anything special IMO.

You mean : GREEN DEATH " !!!!???

smiklos@sunprint 10-09-2014 02:01 PM

This is not the green stuff. I have actually raced on that many times with no complaints.

This is the new gear oil that merc came out with about a 1.5 years ago. I think it retails for 18 dollars per qt. It is not the greenish blue color like High Perf gear lube is. It is touted across the board for Bravo's to the dry sump outdrives for Mercruisers. I have no idea who makes it for Merc as of current but do know who makes the other 2 gear lubes offered by Merc..

Yeah bravo shop would be my choice... Too many issues with merc oil(whomever makes them) to trust and quite a few top performers use NEO (bravo shop) with optimal results.

Prime example of rebranded oil by a non oil company: Land Rover sells $24 per quart gear oil that's merely a mobil product (conventional 75w-90), but its "special" because it says Land Rover..... I opted for the superior Amsoil severe gear synthetic thanks. Names mean nothing, actual Performace is everything.

Mercruiser makes huge coin on oils. That said, I would again pick a proven product direct from the company who blends it. Not a fan of merc oils. They still use 20w-40 for gods sake! A starting 20wt does nothing but increase starting wear. A 40wt is a 40wt at operating temp. A 10w-40 will reduce starting wear, who woulda thought...Don't get me started.

the high performance oil is the green stuff the same that has been around for years, the new oil is called racing gear lube used in all products built and used merc racing bravo, nxt ,6-8 speedmaster have not used any in bravo yet,i wonder if it doesn't mix with the old oil well i have tried all the other stuff amsoil marine ,amsoil severe gear, bravo shop blend torco etc, none seem to be the magic formula to make the bravo last it all depends on what seems to work for you the best, also a good idea to change often and if you see too much metal on magnet tear down and inspect

Can somebody post a picture of the Amsoil synthetic so I know to buy the right stuff. Thanks

mickeymcclgn 10-09-2014 08:47 PM

I use the 75-110 per my drive builders recommendations, it looks like this.

http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...-gear-75w-110/

Some use the 75-140 some use 75-90. But the bottle will look like this.

Hope it helps.

Yup no magic oil. As many of us know, no oil can fix poor metallurgy.

has any one used the 80-90 Schaeffer Manufacturing gear lube in the drives im from the st Louis area and schaeffers is considered a premium oil around here Has a very similar appearance to the older mercury hi po oil

RICHARD CUNY 10-15-2014 06:10 PM

Hi Tim I buy it by the case direct from Amsoil just call them and get an account for $20.00 dollars a year and sell it from your truck.

FinishLine,
I just saw your post from 2014. HAVE YOU EVER RECEIVED INPUT ON THIS, OR ARE YOU USING THE SCHAEFFER GEAR OIL???

I am considering running their gear oil. I have never used their gear oil in Bravo one drives due to concerns about the clutches slipping, but i have used their 15w/40 Supreme 7000 engine oils for 30 years with tremendous engine life.
I still to this day run it in most everything.
