What kind of outdrive is this?

I may be looking at a 1978 Python that the seller says has a speedmaster drive on it and the boat was set up for a BBC
What kind of outdrive is this and how much power can it hold. I'm thinking of putting a 330 HP twin turbo SBC in it that I have. |
my GUESS is sternpower. They were supposed to be good drives, but if you blow it, how are you ever going to get parts when you cant even google a pik of the thing??
Can you get a closer shot of the transom assembly on the outside and inside the boat also?
Volvo with a speed master foot? If it is very rare and no parts.

Looks like a speedmaster 3. Definitely a 3 lower. I know that cause I have one for decoration.
14/15 or mc-1 . Under the cav plate the 14/15 has kind of a box about 4 inches wide and down the back towards propshaft is thin. A mc-1 has a box about 5 to 6 under cav plate and a thick back towards propshaft. Hope this helps or I'm close.

Looks like a Mercruiser Model 2. My 1969 Sea Ray Pachanga had one from the factory. It was changed out in the late 70's for a pre alpha.
Little off your topic,,,,, but a twin turbo small block with only 330 HP??????
Obnoxus, the engine is out of another hull I got. The engine is a 1979 260 hp sbc with a M&W turbo kit on it. According to the literature I found it only adds 50hp to the base engine. I ran the boat yesterday for the 1st time and was seeing 4lbs of boost. It is a blow thru carbed system. It designed to be pretty tame so not much modification has to be done on the engine.
I think it's a #2 also. The transom will tell us for sure.

I talked with the guy and he confirmed it was a late 60's early 70's # 2 drive. It was connected to a 460 HP 482. And yes it does have a 2 blade prop on it. What is the history of the #2 drive? How strong is it?
I put numerous engines in front of that drive in a 1970 Pachanga. Started with a twin turbo 350 small block Gale Banks set up, 6-71 blower on a 400 c.i.,a 454 chevy, and a 427 aluminum headed L-88. The drive held up the engines were the weak link, I guess that's what's called the learning curve. I still have a few old number 2 parts laying around in the attic. John M. PS (also put new stringers and floor in Pachanga go figure)

Masoman, What else can you tell me about this drive? What is the prop shaft diameter? Can props off other speedmaster drives be used? How many splines is the shaft?
I will have to go up in the attic and measure it I will let you know later tonite.
The drive I have has a standard lower unit on it not the speedmaster style and the shaft is 11/8" diameter with 18 splines. I believe it takes the same prop as the old Dana outdrive. John M.

I went and looked at this boat tonight and here is a better close up picture of the transom plate. What problems are there with these outdrives? Is this an electric shifted drive? John, from what you said I guess my spare SSM II props wont work
It is cable shifted in the picture I can see the cable. I do not know what the splines are on the speedmaster lower that you have, the one I have is not the speedmaster it is a standard lower unit.
I have two different "small shaft" speedmaster props for sale locally to you on Craigslist. You would be welcome to try them. They came off a SSM3.

The kit was designed to bolt to a stock 260 HP sbc with no internal engine modifications necessary. I dont even think the carb was rejeted.
