How to check xr drives?
I bought a 33 Outlaw that has been sitting for over 3 years. Looks like hell but I'll clean her up. Thing is I don't know if the drives are good because they were removed and one of them has the prop all scraped up. Come Monday I plan on climbing in to attempt to spin the twin 454 mag mpi's to see if they're seized. I already plan on pulling them to rebuild although I won't if its not necessary. But how can I check if the drives are good? I'm guessing you can't tell by just spinning them.

Is this the boat that was in ny on craigslist?
|
It's not that big of a deal to open them up ( providing you have the necessary tools.)
I wouldn't think that XR's would be hurt behind 385's.....anything over 499 hp and that's a different story;) |
Lil red yes! Those pics on Craigslist were not of the actual boat tho. Needs some serious tlc.
Jay, I'm not worried about that kind of damage. I'm more concerned with him having hit something or running aground and something happening inside before spinning out the coupler. If I do open them up should I be doing anything while I'm there? Or just a gasket to reseal? |
I was ready to get the boat. Damn seller told me those were recent pics! I was ready to go get it. But he stopped answering me and I thought it was a scam. Drain the fluid, check the magnets and pour the fluid through a screen or coffee filter. If that looks good, you're prob fine. Pull the back cap off and look for pitting, chips etc.

I had a buddy go look at it, if this is the same one, I had no pics of the drives, are they really XR's, he had originally said it had 496's but in fact they are 454 mag mpi, I was told 502's

Boat has bravo x s on it .. I also talked to the guy .. He stopped talking to me once I was asking the
Right questions .. Marina claimed motors were bad and had to come completly apart .. No more sunk boats for me .. I stayed away |
I take it back stock bravos .. Guy told me boat had 496 ho s
Now I hear 454 mpi then 502 mpi .. What's it gonna be .. Personally I would part it |
He said his phone was blowing up with ppl after that boat and had to turn it off. The listing did say 496ho's but they're actually 454 mag mpi's.

that last pic looks like it cleaned up pretty good, I have the same boat, u'll luv it on the water, good luck, hope u got a good deal, hopefully their not froze and busted

Drain the gear oil in a very clean pan - then stick a magnet pick up tool in the drained oil to see what you get on the magnet. You can also pour the used gear oil thru a very fine filter or a womens stocking and see what has settled in the filter / stocking.
Next after the gear oil is drain completely the best thing you can do here is pressure test the outdrive and see if holds to Merc's spec. If your air pressure holds in the outdrive turn the propshaft fwd and rev with a wrench as fast as you by hand to see if pressure still holds. Also I would check the propshaft for straightness using a dial indicator tool. Next I would pull the top cap off and look for scoring, discolorations, wear, or metal. |
