grease-able gimble bearing
Anyone know where I can get grease-able gimble bearings? I have some old take-outs from changing to the red dots, from years a go, but can't use them do to clearance with XR U-joints.
|
Posted a long story book about this and why you need to use the proper GB for the clearance issue. The non greasable ones have been in service now for 7 years thru Merc and 8 thru Volvo - they hold up well. I understand you want the greasable GB and yes you can still buy them for the non clearance and the shaved clearance ones - greasable and NON - however you like. If you need a source to buy those, I have them to.
|
Thanks BUP... How much for the greasable standard ones? Who is still selling them, Serria?
|
Yes but for some reason people order the wrong one. just saying there is 2 major players that are bought and sold in the marine industry. SKF and GKN gimbal bearings. I do not have a problem with either. Yes there is other bearings you can buy but sometimes to match them is a PITA. I sell more marine parts to mom and pop marine repair shops than even my own service work these days - that's why I have a lot of this stuff in stock.

BUP,i bought a sieria non greasable bearing today and it looks exactly like a greasable one,it has the hole in it,the outer shield and the dot.what is the difference?
|
Let me add that Link Belt was a major player for the Gimbal Bearings for everyone including the OEM's at one time in the past.
Mike post your Sierra numbers the one you bought and the one you compared it to. here is a bit of info also. Take the outer shield spin all the way around to make sure it does not have a hole bearing side - Just asking. the Bravo Non Greaseable Gimbal Bearing clearance one on one side is 18-21006. Now for Sierra it is listed to be used on all Bravo's & Alphas from 1998 and up. This is sierra listing for the app. this being should come with a plug to take out the grease zerk at the transom assembly and screw in the plug. The Non greaseable GB you never grease anything. hence pull out the zerk and install plug for the reminder. No grease. this is listed for the alphas as well. 1998 and up. Again Sierra listings. 18-21001 is the NON greaseable GB but is NOT clearance on the one end to be used for 1997 back to the 1974. Alphas and Bravos |
What price is everyone paying for these GB's and the part number so I can see the going rate.
|
i will post the part# and price i paid tomorrow.to tired to go back to the shop now.

Ok here this will help everyone and the nay sayers, Mainly for the clearance issue. The non greaseable GB was in Mercruiser apps in 2008. the Merc OEM service bulletin came out in 2009 all about it. This SB is about the non greasable GB
the clearance issue still was back in 2000 for Merc but sierra lists it 1998 and up. the clearance is the main concern to be used correctly per app whether greaesable or NON greaseable. Clink on the link below OEM MERC SB. http://www.ravnsgarage.no/content/mm...0hekklager.pdf . |
What I have been saying in past posts up here and not to use Sierra 18-2100 GB in Bravo apps unless its an older 90's model. Click on the link and scroll down to the gimbal bearing info.
this is OEM Mercruiser info about the their Drive history. It was taught in a class and still is. Been there and done that even have the freakin tee shirt. https://media.perfprotech.com/store/...vo-history.pdf |
I followed BUP's advice on gimble bearings in another thread. The info was dead on! (Thanks John)
For my 2002 bravo one the sierra greaseable bearing is part number 18-21005. I paid just over $70 from a local mercury dealer. You can get it for a few bucks cheaper online. I purchased the mercury bearing first only to find out it was sealed, ungreaseable. I would prefer to grease it myself. The original gimble bearing on my setup was cut back on one side just as BUP states. |
the sierra number on my bearing is 18-2100 it is a link belt.i is for a 1990 bravo boat. the grease hole is blocked, different than the one i took out.it does not have a plug for the grease sert threads.

Looked in the 2014 and the 2015 Sierra Dealer catalog - 18-21001 NON Greaseable - comes with plug for the zerk and is for older models Alpha and Bravo WITHOUT Clearance on one end like the links I posted showing one end .090 clearance.
18-2100 Greaseable NO PLUG for ZERK very clear as to why - Greaseable. Used for Alpha and Bravo older models WITHOUT clearance on one end. Double check - you do not have 18-21001 in the 18-2100 box. Spin the band on the side of the gimbal bearing all the way around to see if grease hole is there. And yes you are correct 18-2100 says a LINK BELT but does not for 18-21001. All the rest of Sierra brands were GKN in which I believe still are including 18-21001. I have not ordered those in a while because I have been using SKF's - GB for the past 5 years |
it does have a hole.i think i can use it and grease it,or should i take it back to my merc dealer and show them my findings?
|
U are saying the your 18-2100 GB has the hole ? - If so that is 100 % correct as it should - 18-2100 should have the hole and the tolerance band should have the opening for you to see the hole and to be able to grease it at the zerk fitting on the transom assembly.
18-21001 NO grease hole in the gimbal bearing and the plug to replace the grease zerk if so desired. |
this is Sierra GB 18-2100 greaseable for the older alpha's and Bravos. This is how it should look.

yes that is it.so you are saying it is packaged wrong?
|
I do not know I am asking you now - because that is 18-2100 in the pic I posted with the greaseable hole and it should be in a 18-2100 Sierra box - is this what you have ?
Hole in bearing to be able to grease and should be 18-2100 for older model alpha and bravos 1997 and back to 70's. and 18-2100 is a LINK BELT brand GB in which is good or at least use to be. |
another image of Sierra 18 - 2100 gimbal bearing and is greaseable - u can see the hole and the bearing comes packed with grease. You still have to grease once installed to. Merc has a proper way to grease if the drive is off.

i have the bearing same as the picture you posted the box it came out of has 18-2100 on it.it sais link belt on the box.
|
Ok 18-2100 that will work for your app as you said it is a 1990 year model and if you want it to be a greaseable gimbal bearing.
for your app the NON greaseable gimbal bearing is 18-21001 - it is your choice what you want to use. Greaseable or NON. They have both options to choose from. . |
^^^^^^thanks for the information.^^^^^^^^
