Another Outdrive Oil Leak
I know someone else has a recent post. Didn't know if my situation would be different.
XR drive. Leaking oil around the prop. Doesn't seem like water is in oil when I drain some. Noticed leak last week. Had to top off reservoir before I put in water. Ran a tank out. Boat was in water all week, I was on vacation. Didn't seem like it leaked any until it's out of the water. Will it make it the rest of the season with adding oil or should I take it to the shop?? |
Are you running a drive shower? Heat will cause drive lube to go past the propshaft seals. But it sounds like they are worn and need to be replaced. The shaft may need polishing also. You could run it and keep an eye on water in the drive, but it isn't a good thing to expel lube into the lake. So I would have it taken care of! It isn't a difficult job to replace the seals.
Hope that helps. Dick |
Thanks.
Yes I have a drive shower. I took my plug out to let some drain and examine the magnet. Oil is shiny and metal on plug. Hopefully I caught it soon enough for it not to be an issue. Took my drive off Thursday and dropped it off for repairs Friday. |
I forgot to follow up... Drive was gone through and it's okay. My prop shaft was pitted and started to rust around the seals. Prop shaft was polished and new seals put in. Leak has stopped. Had drive painted and new decals.
