Bravo gear problem
I was cruising along just fine when the drive came out of gear... Reverse was fine, so I put a left hand prop on and headed in. Oil looked great, upper gear not so much. Top of gear was completely separated from the base. If you can tell me how to post pics I will. Anyone see this before? How much should a gear set cost? Local guys says $3500 and it's not worth rebuilding. Thanks!

To post pics you have to be a paid member or get a photobucket account and get an image code from there to copy and paste.
What kind of drive? X, XR, ...? Upper XR gears are $2k+ new. On eBay a guy had a few sets and they were going for under $1k with test time only on them(what the description claimed). Brand new XR is $9k plus. So they are deffiantly worth rebuilding if you not much is wrong. Only reason I'm commenting so much on an XR is because my drive went out last year and I know from experience. |
I'm gonna guess and say this is a Bravo One drive with the older thin floor gears. You pushed the floor out of the gear. In 2001 Mercury corrected the problem...
|
it's a 2014 Bravo 2x.

Send it to Mr Gadgets on this site. ( Dick Tryce ) Holland MI. He is very good with Bravo drives.
What boat is this on and how much HP? |
I had the cup (where the cone engages) shear off of the gear, found a crack between the gear teeth clear into the inner bearing race surface....is this what happened with yours ?
|
That sounds right. It sheared off right at the base. The gear surfaces look great.
|
look for a crack between the teeth...none the less, retail on a new upper gear set is between $1100-$1200 not $ 3500
|
Where are you located?
|
$1200 gear set, $350 for pinion bearing, upper and lower race bearings $100, upper and lower shims $50, $1000 labor, misc $200. $3000 to fix give or take a little.
