SCX Update

Well after 4 pretty hard summers and lots of Air, 700++ HP in my T/S, I sent in my full SCX's back to Imco for a once over just for piece of mind.
Received pricing for repairs- looks like Upper Pinion gear, clutch gear, clutch cone, other parts and pieces, Yoke and cam? are the major parts they are replacing. Lowers looked great, just suggested I run each on opposite rotation. Oil clean. Price right at 8K for Both Before-I was going thru atleast 2 XR's a summer, Rebuilding each during the winter, kept 2 spares at All times, and carried them with me to out of town runs. Thanks for the honest update, they are definitely better then ANY XR based drive.
How many hours? That's really a pretty fair price I used to spend 8-12k a pair freshening JUNK XR geared Imco SC EVERY season |

What lowers are those ?

SCX lowers too w 1" spacers
Hours- 125+ I usually average almost 50 a year. This past season rebuilding my cabin I only did around 30. change oil at 20 hours minimum. Always looks clean. |
To be honest I'm surprised they needed anything at 125.

Dan has 925ish hp Roots Blower motors 2002 46 Black Thunder with at least 3 seasons on SCX without issues Ryan has 1050ish hp Roots Blower motors 2002 46 Black Thunder with at least 3 seasons on SCX-4 without issues Steve has 950ish Vortech Blower engines 36 Apache and went about 400hrs before rebuilding SCX's But I have heard of at least 3 boats with worn out/broken SCX-4 drives but unfortunately the owners don't post on here, or have ego's not willing to admit their -4s suck at swinging those huge props :party-smiley-004: |
I bet those SCX drives last longer swinging a bravo prop vs Surfacing prop. Dans boat runs a very respectable number IIRC vs the 46 with more HP and cleavers.

I am sure I could have gotten more hours- it probably has several more anyway. I talked with Fred at Imco and decided to take his advice and replace vs possibly having issues in next yr or 2. Again after all the things I have had issues w over the last 10yrs now (wow hard to believe 10 already) these last 4 eventFREE boating yrs makes me a Happy FuKing Camper! O and its been a few yrs since I have had to idle for 2 hours listening to my Wife Beeetch -- this Fuking Boat----- Priceless !! |
Yup, you'd hate to try to stretch it and either have the long idle back in from somewhere or even worse, experiencing a massive failure that takes out a case, etc. making for an even more expensive repair.

I'm surprised it needed all that in the upper after 125 hours? How much power are you making?
I'm on my second set of pinion gears in my BMax uppers but I've owned them since 2006. I replaced the first pinion gear around 300hrs (about $2000 in cost for both uppers for me to do the work myself). The new pinion gears have about 200 hours on them now and I when through them a few months ago. They they look good so far and I increased power up another 75-100hp (965hp) two years ago. |

Quinlan- do you any thing to maintain the bare aluminum on the lowers as far as shining them up from time to time?

Did you lose any top speed compared to a traditional XR drive?

Probably 3-5 or so. But I figured out my blowers were chit too so I have new ones coming- To Be Continued!
