Bravo oil pump & cooler?
I'm thinking I want to put a pump and cooler on the oil circuit in the bravo. I am certain someone has tried this and looking for reasons why not to do it? I can't locate any oil circuit schematics, but was thinking I'd tap into the lower oil drain and connect to a small electric pump and cooler? Not a good idea?

Drew Marine was the 1st to make one.
http://www.drewmarine.com/products/c...coolswirl.html I believe Max Machine Worx has done it too. Edit in: Looks like Mr Gadgets (respected drive builder on this board) makes one too: http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...il-cooler.html |
This is very helpful...what keeps the oil flowing? I did not see a pump anywhere and if so, did he tap of the drain plug at the bottom of the outdrive?

I'm really interested too. How much do they really help vs a good drive shower? Also, how tough are the connections? That's my worry, we have some kelp and wood around.

I'm tempted to plumb a return line from the lower drain plug and back to a 12V pump and cooler. I'll switch it in a t-stat so I let the oil be warm under light-duty conditions (improved efficiency), then flip on the pump/cooler when running higher speed. If the bearings on the Bravo are like others (they must be characteristically similar), they'll start to fail when lubrication is minimal (e.g. hot fluid). I'll let you know how it goes.

Seeing that my drive is fully surfaced with the water only hitting the bottom of the bullet when on plane I could easily tap into the top of the bullet and pull hot oil from the bullet and then return it to the top cap after filtering and cooling. I wonder if this would be worth it. I dump most of my engine water onto the top and sides of the upper drive. This is the water that connected to the risers on stock exhaust.

Curious what the flow rate of the pump is? I suspect its a liter/min....
