there's a clip on the inside of the transom. If you have the space, you can use a screwdriver to pop the clip out. I use a long pair of needle nose to replace the clip on the new fitting.

How far into the stand off box is the e-clip? I followed the lube line from the reservoir and I can't even feel the end of the lube line with my finger,

ts a real pita, but can be done,,biggest trick(like you've found out) is finding the end.I use a pick w/ grease on it to remove the clip an a screwdriver w/ grease to position the e-clip back on.sets it up for the push back on.

what setup did you do it on? i am having a hard time fathoming this is possible with out pulling an engine... have 525's in a baja 30 outlaw... not a lot of wiggle room.

It's on the inside of the transom assy....you would have to reach inside of the box, clear to the back to get to it....I also cant fathom it being possible without pulling an engine

I just changed one of these today on a 25 Outlaw w/496, what a job.,, not my boat.
Behind the engine.,very little room for my hands, ,, I removed the oil cooler,, remove the pin on power steering so i could move it over a bit,, remove sea water hose, remove the sea water neck on the transom, remove the oil line from the transom oil fitting, use a flat screwdriver to remove the e-clip from the fitting, the fitting was real tight in the housing, i used a crowbar to slowly pry it back .
Outside the boat,,remove the drive, remove the helmet to get to the fitting and pull it straight out the back.
Then put everything back together.
While I had the drive off, i installed a new Gimble bearing, u-joint bellows, and u-joints.
Good Luck

yeah called a couple "big shops" and they all said yes it can be done but good luck in a 30ft side by side... if it was a staggered setup you can get in there. this was pretty much my assumption from the beginning but was hoping for dumb ass pass....
